Mining

Diamonds are Lesotho's principal mineral export, and the country's kimberlite mines are known for large, high value stones; the Letšeng mine is 70 per cent owned by Gem Diamonds and 30 per cent by the Government of Lesotho. Lesotho also has deposits of base metals, clay, dimension stone, sand and gravel. The Government is introducing a digital mining cadastre, reviewing mining legislation and has opened licensing for artisanal and small scale mining.
